Children with Family Members in Prison

Overview

In the UK, it’s estimated that around 200,000 school-aged children have a family member in prison. Students with an incarcerated family member may not always be able to share this information with the school. This can make it challenging to safeguard them as they deal with associated challenges like trauma and familial instability. How can you support children dealing with the incarceration of a family member and make sure they get the support they need?

Understanding the impact that having a family member in prison can have on a child is an important part of making sure they receive the support they need. Once you recognise the challenges they may face, you can take steps to meet their needs and safeguard them against harm.

Outline Learning Objectives:

  • Recognise the impact that having a family member in prison can have on children, so you can spot when a child may need additional support
  • Identify how you and your colleagues can support students who have an incarcerated family member to make sure they’re adequately safeguarded
