Fabricated or Induced Illness
Overview
When a student is genuinely unwell, their parents or caregivers must prioritise the investigation and treatment of their illness. But what if the child isn’t actually ill, or their caregivers exaggerate their symptoms?
Fabricated or Induced Illness (FII) is a rare and complex form of child abuse. Learning about what it is will help you understand how it can undermine the welfare of children. Knowing the signs to look out for that could suggest a student is a victim of FII will help you safeguard them. Understanding how to support them in recovering from the abuse they’ve experienced will help you prioritise their safety and welfare.
